And I had wanted, among other things, a song. (2026) is the third – and, as planned, final – work in a series based on reworkings of music by the medieval composer Guillaume de Machaut, with Messe de Nostre Dame as a point of distortion. The first part was written for Kalle Moberg and Håkon Thelin in 2024, and the second for Ny Norsk Messingkvintett, Frode Haltli and Geir Strande Syrrist in 2025. Alongside quotations, reworkings, and reworkings of reworkings, I weave several other works by Machaut into this piece, bringing together sacred music, festive courtly music, and sorrowful love songs in slow lines and lingering sonorities. The keywords, incidentally, are: noise, dust, rust and grime – and, above all, loneliness.
